Betsey Johnson at Paraphernalia

Updated: Jan 26, 2022

In Halston on Netflix we briefly saw the shop window for Paraphernalia, a Manhattan boutique in the late 1960s. But did you know that this shop launched Betsey Johnson’s career?

Johnson graduated college in 1964 and that year, she won a contest with Mademoiselle magazine and started working there. She also made clothes, and when the founder of Paraphernalia was looking for a fresh, young designer, the magazine recommended her.

She began designing for Paraphernalia in 1965 (the same year it opened) alongside other Youthquake designers like Mary Quant. She eventually left the boutique in 1969 and we all know that she’s had a huge career since then, but here is some of her work for Paraphernalia in museums.
